President Andrzej Duda took part in the Szczecin celebrations of the 43rd anniversary of the signing of the August Agreements. During the ceremony, he unveiled the Monument to the Heroes of January ’71, which was erected at the West Pomeranian Voivodeship Office in Szczecin.

The anniversary celebrations in Szczecin began with the unveiling of the Monument to the Heroes of January ’71 in front of the West Pomeranian Voivodship Office in Waly Chrobry. The president participated in the celebrations Andrzej Duda.

The monument was created on the initiative of the Board of the West Pomeranian Region NSZZ “Solidarity” and the “December 70-January 71” Social Association. The 8-ton ship propeller comes from the m/s “Solidarność” ship. It was donated by the Polish Maritime Shipping Company.

– Today we are following the last, perhaps the most important straight line, which ultimately led us to free Poland. Thanks to the steadfastness of the people of Solidarity, patriots devoted to the cause of historical truth, today, on the 43rd anniversary of the signing of the agreement here at the Szczecin Shipyard, ending the strike of the workers of the west coast, we are following the path that has been going since 1970, said the president.

43 years ago, on August 31, 1980, one of the most surprising events of the 20th century took place in Poland. The peaceful rebellion led to the consent of the communist authorities to the establishment of independent trade unions.

August Agreements became the beginning of the changes of 1989 – the overthrow of communism and the end of the Yalta system.
