Szczecin. Dog abandonment plague. “The situation is appalling”

During the first two weeks of June, almost 30 dogs came to the shelter in Szczecin. The employees of the shelter claim that it is a holiday abandonment and appeal to the residents. They intend to report the cases to the prosecutor’s office.

In the first week of June, 18 dogs were brought to the Shelter for Homeless Animals in Szczecin. In the next 10. Similar situations intensify before the holidays every year, but this one – as the representatives of the shelter admit – is unfortunately exceptional.

– We haven’t had as many cases as this year. The situation is terrifying – tells us Ewa Murawska, the manager of the shelter. As he explains, dogs adopted in the middle of one month occupied almost a third of all animal stalls.

An appeal to human decency

– As of today, we have 36 cats and 63 dogs – sums up the manager. – There were many situations when we suspected that the animals were brought to us by the owners who declared that they had found the animal, but the behavior of the dogs showed that they were abandoned and these people were their guardians – he admits.

A woman cannot understand such behavior. – If someone takes a pet, they should anticipate that someday they will want to go somewhere. We appeal that the decision to abandon is a last resort. There are hotels for animals – he reminds.

It ensures that cases of abandonment will be reported to the services. He admits, however, that such cases, if there is no evidence, are rejected by the police or the prosecutor’s office. “We’re meeting a wall,” he says. So what remains is an appeal to human decency.
