Shortly after the end of the Olympic Games, information appeared that the program of struggle in 2028 in Los Angeles would run out of boxing. It was the aftermath of the conflict of the International Olympic Committee with the International Boxing Association (IBA). Both organizations did not agree, among others in the Ineane Khelif and Lin Yu-Ting. IBA claimed that they could not compete as a woman, and the IOC had a different opinion.
What about boxing at the Olympic Games? They decided on Los Angeles in 2028
In recent months, there have been many indications that the boxing may actually disappear from the games program, but the IOC has seriously approached this matter. The organization has just announced to the world that it has taken important steps for the future of discipline on the arena of the most important sports struggles in the world.
The IOC decided to recognize the organization of World Boxing and at the same time recognized it as “a boxing body at a global level within the Olympic movement”. The boxing organization, in turn, informed: “The World Boxing organization was satisfied with the decision of the Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to give its temporary recognition as an international federation as part of the Olympic movement regulating boxing at the world level.”
– This is a very important day for everyone related to boxing sport in the Olympic movement. Maintaining his place at the Olympic Games is absolutely crucial for the future of our sport at every level, from the basic level to the highest levels of professional boxing, and this decision of the IOC brings us a step to our purpose, which is to restore boxing to the Olympic program – said Boris Van Der Vorst, president of World Boxing.
This means, of course, that the boxing will not disappear from the Olympic Games program, and the flicest competition can be followed in Los Angeles. It is also good information for the silver medalist from Paris Julia Szeremeta, who planned to start in the USA and now can breathe a sigh of relief that she will be able to fight for another “album”.
The World Boxing Federation currently associates 78 national federations, including Poland since December 2024. Therefore, this organization takes over the current duties of IBA and becomes the most important organ of world boxing. For the IOC, the departure of the national federation from the IBA managed by Russians was one of the conditions for maintaining the discipline at the games and apparently succeeded.
