Szprotawa in the Lubuskie province is waiting for the culminating wave on the Bóbr River. It is expected to arrive at around 2-3 a.m. In Pilichowice, where the dam is located, control over the situation has been lost. Mayor Mirosław Gąsik has decided to cancel classes in educational institutions.
In an interview with “Gazeta Regionalna”, the mayor of Szprotawa said that local services are securing all sensitive places that may be subject to flooding. – Unfortunately, these floods are already starting to occur. The water in the Bóbr is rising very quickly – he emphasized.
As he assessed, in Pilichowice, where the dam is located, “control over the situation has been lost”. – The peak wave is heading towards us. We expect it around 2-3 a.m. – he informed, adding that he had canceled classes in all educational institutions in the commune.
– I also signed an order declaring a flood alarm. We are in constant contact with the services – noted Mirosław Gąsik.
No evacuation for now
For now, Szprotawa is not thinking about evacuating residents. – When it comes to evacuation, we are still holding back. We do not know how big the peak wave will reach us. We have prepared places for evacuation – explained the mayor.
He also stressed that the places most at risk of flooding are the lowest ones, close to the Bóbr. He mentioned Waryńskiego Street and Zamkowa Street, among others. – We are also securing the water treatment plant. We feel unity among the residents. Everyone helps everyone else – concluded Gąsik.
