An earthquake off the coast of Taiwan with a magnitude of over 7 hit the port city of Hualian extremely hard. Local TV stations showed footage of collapsed and tilted buildings. At least four people died.

A powerful earthquake struck the coast of Taiwan on Wednesday, with a magnitude between 7.2 and 7.7, according to various research centers. As a result of this incident, buildings collapsed in many parts of the city of Hualien in the east of the island. Taiwanese media reported that some people were trapped inside.

According to the Central Taiwan Meteorological Administration, the quake occurred at 7:58 a.m. local time.

The earthquake was so powerful that it was reported to have been felt as far away as Shanghai and in Fuzhou, Xiamen, Quanzhou and Ningde in Fujian Province. Reuters found that 25 aftershocks have been recorded since the earthquake.

Tsunami warning

Japanese authorities have issued a tsunami warning on the islands of Okinawa Prefecture. Waves up to three meters high were expected. It was the first tsunami warning for Okinawa in 26 years, public television NHK reported.

The Philippine Seismological Agency also issued a tsunami warning. “High tsunami waves are expected in coastal areas along the Pacific Ocean,” the agency warned.
