A strong earthquake was recorded in Taiwan on Tuesday. The 6.3-magnitude quake was also felt in the capital, Taipei. Geologists suspect that the seismic activity is linked to the powerful quake that killed 17 people earlier this month.

An earthquake hit the Hualian city region in Taiwan on Tuesday night. According to the country's meteorological administration, the tremors had a magnitude of 6.3 and the hypocenter was at a depth of 5.5 kilometers.

A series of strong shocks

According to Reuters, the quake was felt in the capital of Taiwan, Taipei, where buildings shook. No information was provided about any damage.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that this was not the only quake in the region – a magnitude 6.0 quake was recorded just six minutes later, and slightly weaker seismic activity before that.

According to representatives of the Taiwan Geological Center, the series of tremors is related to a powerful quake that hit the eastern coast of the island in early April. The 7.2-magnitude quake caused widespread damage in and around Hualien City. 17 people died in the quake and many others were injured.
