Before winter sleep, they look for food
In the fall, bears need to saturate themselves before their winter nap. It is during this period that they appear in the vicinity of human settlements every year. They like to eat fruit that grows on trees – apples or plums.
Naturalists from the Tatra National Park are familiar with the bears that come out of the mountain area and head towards the houses. Such problematic individuals are put on telemetry collars, thanks to which their movements can be tracked. In case of dangerous approach of bears to human settlements, predators are scared off with rubber bullets.
In Poland, bears are under strict protection, and their main refuge is the Bieszczady Mountains. Adult specimens weigh about 300 kg and live up to 50 years. Every two years in the lair, the female gives birth to from one to three young, who remain under the care of their mother for a year and a half. Bears are omnivores.
