Tatra Mountains. Closed trails. Głuszece and black grouse are starting Toki

In the coming weeks, some of the Tatra trails will be inaccessible to tourists. All because of the capercales and the black grouse that start Toki. The authorities of the Tatra National Park appealed to follow the ban and provide birds with peace.

From Saturday in Tatras Tourist restrictions apply due to the protection of the capercaillie and the black grouse. Spring is a key time of their mating, and scoring birds can lead to breeding disappearance, threatening the survival of the population – warned the Tatra National Park (TPN).

There are only about 40 caperries and black grouse in the park. Therefore, from March 1 to May 15, in the morning, sections of tourist routes will be closed: Polana Chochołowska – Bobrowiecki Żleb – Grześ (yellow trail); Bobrowiecka Pass – Bobrowiecki Żleb – Grześ (blue trail); Grześ – Long Upłaz – Rakoń (blue trail).

In addition, the ski trail from Polana Chochołowska to the Bobrowiecki gully was permanently closed. In addition, from March 1 to November 30 throughout the TPN area, it is forbidden to move on the trails from dusk to dawn.

Threatened with extinction

Głuszce and Castrope are unique species of forest churches belonging to the most endangered birds in Poland and Europe. The blacksmiths are famous for its spectacular rings – morning mating rituals, during which males compete for females. Głuszce, they are larger and also undergo spectacular Toki, making characteristic sounds reminiscent of “clicking”. Both species require peace and quiet, which is why strict protection of their habitats is crucial for their survival.

TPN appeals to tourists to follow restrictions and respect for wild nature: “The future of these unusual birds depends on our responsibility” – appeal the park authorities.
