On Friday, a TOPR rescuer found the body of a tourist who died after falling from a height in the Tatra Mountains. On Saturday, TOPR team members transported them using a helicopter, said Kamil Suder, the rescuer on duty.
– A tourist died after falling from a height in the area of Zawratowa Turnia. Yesterday in the afternoon, a TOPR rescuer came across the tourist’s body, but due to the late hour and bad weather conditions, it was not possible to transport the body to Zakopane – explained the TOPR rescuer.
12 rescuers and a helicopter crew took part in the activities.
The higher parts of the Tatra Mountains have difficult conditions for tourism. The snow is not trampled in many places, and the wind has created deep drifts.
An additional difficulty is the low cloud ceiling and fog in the ridge areas, which limit visibility, which may lead to getting lost. Navigating in such conditions requires experience, the ability to assess the local avalanche risk and adapting the route to the current conditions. It is necessary to have equipment such as: crampons, ice ax, helmet and avalanche ABC.
