A tourist who slipped during an expedition to Koscielec in the Tatra Mountains has died. Rescuers of the Tatra Volunteer Rescue Service warn of difficult conditions in the mountains. There is still about one and a half meters of snow on Hala Gąsienicowa.

The accident happened on Saturday evening. Rescuers received a notification from the Rescue Communication Center around 7 pm. – A tourist fell from Kościelec, most likely as a result of tripping while going down. It started to slide down and fell on the western side of Kościelec – says Andrzej Mikler, TOPR duty officer. The accident proved fatal.

As the rescuer points out, the tourist and the man accompanying her were well prepared for the trip to the mountains, they had crampons, ice axes and helmets. – As you can see, it was an unfortunate accident, a moment of inattention – sums up Mikler.

Rescuers warn of winter conditions that still prevail in the Tatra Mountains. – We already have green grass in Zakopane, it’s a bit relaxing. You have to remember that it is still full winter in the mountains. There is one and a half meters of snow on Hala Gąsienicowa in the area of ​​Kotło pod Świnica, and it is growing all the time, because every rainfall we have in Zakopane is snow at the top – says Mikler.
