Tatras. “Avalanche Double”
The second, moderate avalanche risk in the Tatra Mountains was announced on Saturday by TOPR rescuers. After the night’s snowfall, it became very dangerous there. The avalanche risk is additionally increased by strong winds.
Avalanche two applies from an altitude of 1,900 meters above sea level. This means that triggering an avalanche is usually possible with a high additional load, especially on steep slopes. Spontaneous descent of very large avalanches is unlikely. In the Tatra Mountains last night, smaller avalanches descended on steep slopes on their own. The Tatra National Park (TPN) published a photo of such an avalanche that descended from Kasprowy Wierch towards Dolina Gąsienicowa.
There is already 48 cm of snow on Kasprowy Wierch, and 30 cm in the Valley of Five Polish Ponds. TPN services warn that the Tatra Mountains have exceptionally unfavorable conditions for tourism. All trails are very slippery. “Snow cover in the higher parts of the Tatra Mountains is highly differentiated. In many places there is icing, which can be covered with a thin layer of snow, here and there stones protrude. Slipping in steep terrain may result in a dangerous fall from a height. experience in winter mountain tourism and having appropriate equipment, such as: crampons, ice axe, helmet, avalanche equipment and the ability to use them.An additional difficulty is the low cloud ceiling, which, combined with sleet, significantly reduces visibility, which may lead to loss of orientation in the field and getting lost” – we read in the TPN communiqué on Saturday. There is also a thin layer of snow or ice on the lower-lying trails. Poles and crampons may be necessary during a trip to the montane valleys.
Beskids in the snow
Rescuers from the Beskids also warn about the danger in the mountains. – There was some snow in the past day – for example, 12 centimeters in Hala Miziowa, where the snow cover is now 20 centimeters, in Markowe Szczawiny 10 centimeters of fresh powder fell, Jacek Wojtaś, the duty officer of the Beskid GOPR Group, informed on Saturday morning. The lifeguard added that in Markowe Szczawiny and Hala Miziowa visibility was limited to a maximum of 500 meters in the morning. “The conditions are difficult,” he admitted.
