Swift bought original recordings from the current owner – Shamrock Capital. The financial conditions of the transaction were not disclosed.
“Since I found out that it really was happening, I broke with tears of joy at random intervals,” wrote the singer on her website.
The conflict extending since 2019
In 2004, 14-year-old Taylor Swift signed a record contract with the Big Machine label. In exchange for an advance, the label took over the ownership of the main versions of its first six albums. As BBC writes, it was a fairly common practice in the era before the streaming era, when the artists needed the support of a record label so that their works were played on the radio, and that they could produce and distribute CDs.
The Swift agreement with Big Machine expired in 2018. The artist then signed a contract with Republic Records and Universal Music Group. A year later, Big Machine was sold by Ithaca Holdings Scooter Braun. The singer said that she was not able to buy them at the time.
In November 2020, the musical tycoon sold his shares in the SWIFT catalog for the Shamrock Holdings investment fund from Los Angeles. “This is the second time my music was sold without my knowledge,” the artist commented.
In view of the conflict on the rights of works, Swift recorded four out of the first six albums again. They are known as “Taylor's Versions”.
