The prosecutor's office is investigating the circumstances of the death of a 37-year-old man who died on the night of Thursday to Friday in a cell at the District Police Headquarters in Tczew (Pomeranian Voivodeship). A few hours earlier, the man had been detained for possession of drugs and allegedly swallowed something at the sight of police officers.
Officers detained the 37-year-old on Thursday around 8 p.m. because they suspected he might have a significant amount of drugs on him.
– At the sight of the police officers, the man swallowed something. 130 grams of amphetamine were secured from the detainee – said Mariusz Duszyński from the District Prosecutor's Office in Gdańsk.
In accordance with the procedure, the 37-year-old was taken to hospital for tests. – On-site doctor stated that there were no contraindications to placing the man in the detainee room at the District Police Headquarters in Tczew – said prosecutor Duszyński.
Investigation into failure to fulfil obligations
– At around 1:00 a.m., the officers noticed on the monitoring that the detainee was not moving. An ambulance was called to the scene. Paramedics tried to resuscitate the man, but unfortunately without a positive result – added the prosecutor.
On Friday, the District Prosecutor's Office in Tczew initiated an investigation into failure to fulfil obligations, as well as exposing the person to direct danger of loss of life or serious bodily harm and unintentionally causing death.
