– We will not stand in front of you at press conferences. We wanted to present you, this stage has ended, now there will probably be a more political stage – before starting a series of questions from journalists, the head of the Ministry of National Defense, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, turned to the experts of the new team that is to assess the activities of Antoni Macierewicz’s Smolensk subcommittee. The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that the team is apolitical.
On Friday, a press conference was held by the Minister of Defense and Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and the Deputy Minister of Defense Cezary Tomczykwhile the composition of the new team was presented, which is to assess the functioning of Antoni Macierewicz’s Smolensk subcommittee. After the official part of the conference, it was time for journalists to ask questions. However, before this happened, Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz noticed that political questions would soon be asked and asked the members of the new team to leave the conference.
“Political” questions, experts leave
– I would like to thank you very much for accepting this challenge and this responsibility, but I would also like to clearly emphasize the apolitical nature of the team and our activities at the Ministry of National Defense – said Kosiniak-Kamysz. – That’s why I would like to thank you for participating in the conference. Now there will probably be questions of a political nature, we will be left alone with the minister (Tomczyk – ed.), that is our task – he pointed out.
– Politics, civilian supervision, this is our task at the Ministry of National Defense, you have tasks related to explaining and checking what has been happening over the last eight years – added the Deputy Prime Minister. – We will not stand in front of you at press conferences. We wanted to present you, this stage is over, now there will probably be a more political stage – he said, thanking the experts who left the press conference after a while, and ministers Kosiniak-Kamysz and Tomczyk moved on to answering journalists’ questions.
During the conference, both ministers emphasized that the members of the new team are “the best of the best”, officers, experts who have been serving the Polish armed forces for 20-30 years. – We can create working conditions for the team. But neither I, nor the Prime Minister, nor any politician, at least I don’t know any in our leadership, is an expert in air accident investigation, is not an auditor and does not deal with this type of things – said Cezary Tomczyk later in the conference. – That’s why there are specialists and experts whom you had the opportunity to meet – he added.
Apolitical nature of the army, civilian supervision of the army
Politicians of the new ruling coalition have assured many times that their priorities include depoliticization and strengthening the army. – No more wearing uniforms, because uniforms are for soldiers, for officers. There is a completely different outfit for politicians, the one we wear here – Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz said in December after the exposé Donald Tusk. – No more disguises, everything will be sorted out, civilian supervision over the army and the role of the Polish Army and the commanders of the Polish Army – he emphasized. During the 2023 election campaign, former head of the Ministry of National Defense Mariusz Błaszczak he appeared against the background of the army very often, just like other politicians PIS.
