On Saturday, a tourist died at the Chałubiński Gate. According to TOPR rescuer Stanisław Krzeptowski-Sabała, the man most likely slipped on a patch of frozen snow and fell from a great height, suffering fatal injuries. The conditions in the higher parts of the Tatra Mountains are very difficult.

– The fatal accident occurred when a tourist aged about 70 was descending from the Chałubiński Gate. There is still a lot of frozen snow in this place – said Stanisław Krzeptowski-Sabała, a rescuer from the Tatra Volunteer Search and Rescue Service, in the evening.

Difficult conditions

In the higher parts Tatra Mountains the conditions are very difficult. Although there is no permanent snow cover there, there are frozen patches in shaded places.

– Sometimes these sections with frozen snow are short and it may seem that there are only a few meters to go, but this is when accidents most often occur. Therefore, in such places you should use crampons, have an ice ax in your hand and a helmet on your head. If we do not have such equipment, we should turn back and abandon the further trip – warned a TOPR rescuer.
