Terrifying scenes in “hell on earth”. Two thousand bodies collected from the streets, the rebels “rape mothers and daughters”

The city of Goma has been called “hell on earth” for years, one of the most dangerous places in the world, especially for women. On January 27, there was a massive escape from the local prison and the horror of prisoners held there.

– The authorities of the Democratic Republic of Congo report that at least 165 women were raped by male prisoners while escaping from Muzenze prison in Gomie – informs Jeremy Laurence, spokesman for the office of the High Commissioner of the UN for human rights.

The internal report developed by the UN, which was reached by BBC journalists, shows that most of these women burned alive after the prisoners set fire to the building.

The investigation into the crime is currently impossible to conduct, because the control over the millionth city located in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo was taken over by rebels from the M23 group, supported by the neighboring Rwanda. The fight is about, among others, the rich deposits of rare raw materials.

Thousands of people escaped from Goma, above all women and girls in fear of mass rapes, which in this part of the world are treated as a tool for waging war and intimidating the enemy.

– It really happens. Many of us have been raped. Rebels enter their homes and rape mothers and daughters. If they find them together, they rape them all together in their tents. They rob and rape women and girls – reports Floride Furaha, who escaped from Goma.

Western organizations present in Congo report that about three thousand people have recently died as a result of the fight. Mass graves are created, because the locals cannot keep up with burials.

– In recent days, two thousand bodies have been collected from Goma streets, and 900 bodies are still in hospital osteos. We expect this number to increase. In some areas there are still many decaying bodies – informs Vivian Van de Perre, deputy of the UN envoy to Congo.

Employees of the World Food Program warn against the humanitarian crisis on a large scale, because in overcrowded refugee camps, cholera is crazy.

According to the UN agency for refugees, 400,000 people have been forced to leave their homes from the beginning of the year. A few days ago, for safety reasons, the UN withdrew their staff from Goma, leaving only absolutely necessary employees on the spot.
