Nine people were injured in a shooting near Jasper, Texas, on Sunday. Authorities said there was an after-prom party at a private property. Authorities said there was also a second shooting in the city, and the events may be related. Several people are interrogated.
According to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting happened after midnight Saturday night into Sunday. Officers found nine people with gunshot wounds. They assessed that they did not threaten the lives of the victims.
“There was no incident at the prom itself,” CBS quoted John Seybold, superintendent of the Jasper Independent School District (ISD).
Most of the victims were taken to Jasper Memorial Hospital. Some were moved from there to Christus St. Elizabeth for further treatment. There were about 250 people aged 15 to 19 at the party.
Jasper police said there was also a second shooting in the city. “The police department is investigating the matter, but there is a possible connection between the two shootings,” the statement said. The services did not provide information on possible victims as a result of the second incident.
Several people are interrogated
According to local sources, ISD is working with law enforcement to help with the investigation and identify the perpetrators. Several people are in connection with the shooting of the interrogators.
Increased police presence is expected to increase student safety. They will also be provided with psychological consultations.
Jasper, with a population of approximately 6,800, is located in eastern Texas, approximately 70 km from the Louisiana border.
