Thailand landslide death toll rises, search for missing continues

The death toll from a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall on the Thai island of Phuket has risen to 13, local authorities said Sunday, adding that three people were missing.

A landslide on the popular tourist island of Phuket in southern Thailand killed 13 people on Friday, local authorities said on Sunday. Earlier, we reported 10 dead. Three people are missing, and 19 were injured, authorities said.

Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat said the dead included Burmese nationals, a Thai and a Russian couple. He added that more than 200 households were affected by the mudslide.

The disaster occurred in a populated part of the island, where there are numerous hotels and tourist apartments. Recordings posted online show that the houses that were buried were completely destroyed.

– Heavy rain that began at 2 a.m. (Friday – ed.) caused a landslide that damaged houses. Residents of the area were caught by surprise, local police chief Khundech Na Nongkhai told AFP news agency.
