President Volodymyr Zelensky visited eastern Ukraine on Thursday, in the Sumy region, where he embraced the architect of the offensive in the Kursk region, General Oleksandr Syrsky. The occupation of Russian lands is a success that Ukrainians desperately needed on the eve of Independence Day. The only question is what price they will have to pay for it. The American embassy in Kiev is already warning of Russian retaliation, and the Chinese embassy estimates that travel to Ukraine is currently associated with greater risk than usual.
As the Ukrainian army releases more photos of shelling in Kursk Oblast, the American embassy in Kiev warns of Russian retaliation. In the next few days, there will be more missile and drone attacks on Ukrainian cities.
The Chinese embassy is warning its citizens that travel to Ukraine in the near future is even more risky than before. Ukraine's Independence Day celebrations are planned for Saturday, and Russia wants to ruin them and take revenge for the Ukrainian military's incursion into its territory.
However, the Ukrainian president announced in a televised speech that the army would continue to operate on Russian soil. “Our operation in the Kursk area is ongoing. We are continuing combat operations. We are controlling the designated areas. I thank all our guys and units for replenishing the exchange funds,” said Volodymyr Zelensky.
Ukraine calls the Russian prisoners of war an “exchange fund” that will be exchanged for Ukrainian soldiers imprisoned in Russia in the future. President Volodymyr Zelensky appeared in person right on the border with Russia. He warmly embraced Oleksandr Syrsky. The commander of the Ukrainian armed forces allegedly kept his intention to attack Kursk Oblast a closely guarded secret until the last moment. He allegedly spoke about the action only with Zelensky. The Ukrainian president also reported that Ukrainian troops had captured another village in Kursk Oblast.
– This operation has been going on for three weeks now and Russia has not yet found a solution to counteract it. It does not have enough forces to stop the Ukrainians, let alone retake the lost territories, so this is a huge problem for Putin. It is a nail in his shoe that keeps bothering him until he does something about it – assesses General Stanisław Koziej, former head of the National Security Bureau.
The Russians are also annoyed by the fact that a Western journalist, CNN correspondent Nick Paton Walsh, appeared in Kursk Oblast with Ukrainian troops. The Federal Security Service issued a warrant for his arrest. It is thanks to Walsh, among other things, that the West knows what is happening in Kursk Oblast.
Will Germany cut aid to Ukraine?
Chancellor Olaf Schol, asked about the Ukrainian operation, stated that it was too early to assess it. He added that it had not been consulted with Germany. – Ukraine prepared the military operation in Kursk Oblast in secret, without feedback. It is a very limited operation in terms of area and probably also in terms of time. So for now we will not comment on it, this operation can only be assessed after some time – said the German Chancellor.
Olaf Scholz, during his visit to Moldova, assured that his country would continue to financially support Ukraine. Recently, there have been rumors, amplified by Russian propaganda, that the government in Berlin wanted to limit support for Kiev from the state budget.
– Germany will not stop supporting Ukraine, it will provide assistance as long as it is necessary. We will remain the largest supporter of Ukraine in Europe. Only the United States provides it with more assistance – said Olaf Scholz.
Indian Prime Minister's Visit to Kiev
Ukraine is increasingly pressing for a portion of the proceeds from Russian assets frozen in EU countries to be used to support it. The Czech Republic has announced that it will soon buy ammunition for Ukraine with Russian money.
– We are discussing with partners to make real decisions on the promised $50 billion from frozen Russian assets. Our partners have already made many political statements, but we need a real mechanism. It is necessary that funds from the aggressor's assets are used for real assistance in defense against this aggressor – emphasizes Volodymyr Zelensky.
Volodymyr Zelensky is waiting with great hope for Narendra Modi's arrival in Kyiv. The Indian Prime Minister will want to erase the bad impression that was created after his July visit to Russia. When Modi fell into Putin's arms and exchanged jokes with him, Russian missiles were falling on a children's hospital in the Ukrainian capital.
