A recently published biography reveals how George Harrison summarized his confrontation with the attacker who broke into his home in 1999 and stabbed him over 40 times with a knife and a sword. It recalls the circumstances of the incident in which The Beatles’ guitarist came close to death.

The new biography of George Harrison premiered on October 24. Its author is the English writer Philip Norman. According to “Independent”, the book revealed several previously unknown facts from the life of the famous guitarist. She appeared in it, among others: mention of a burglary at Harrison’s house near London, during which the musician was injured over 40 times. The Independent explains that the break-in occurred on the night of December 29-30, 1999.

As described in the book, the guitarist left the bedroom after hearing the sound of glass breaking. On the stairs, he encountered a man armed with a knife and a sword taken from a statue in the garden. The attacker attacked Harrison and struck him more than 40 times with sharp instruments. He punctured the musician’s lung and the blows narrowly missed his heart. “I’m being murdered in my own home,” the star allegedly thought during the attack. As we read in the fragment of the biography quoted by the Independent, his wife Olivia rushed to Harrison’s aid. She hit the intruder on the head with a lamp. Later, the police arrived at the scene and the attacker was arrested.

George Harrison’s home invasion. How he reacted

The guitarist’s son, Dhani, then 22, told the biographer that his father, although he came close to death, commented on the whole situation humorously. He said of the attacker: “He definitely didn’t come to audition for Traveling Wilburys.” He referred to the name of the musical supergroup he founded in 1988, together with, among others, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty or Roy Orbison. The Independent emphasizes that while the course of the attack was known to the media earlier, Harrison’s ironic comment was not known.

The man who attacked Harrison was identified as 33-year-old Michael Abram from Liverpool. In 2000, the court declared him insane. He stayed in a psychiatric hospital for almost three years. Later he regretted what he did. – If I could turn back time, I would give anything not to attack Harrison. But looking back, I realized that at that moment I had no control over my actions, Abram emphasized in the statement quoted by the daily.
