The worst floods in decades have hit West African countries. Schools in Niger will start teaching almost a month late.
Some buildings have been damaged, while others are receiving flood victims, said the junta that took power in Nowhere in a coup in July 2023. The start of the school year has been postponed from October 2 to 28.
West African countries have been hit by heavy rain and flooding in recent weeks, killing hundreds of people. Mali, Niger and Nigeria are experiencing their worst floods in 30 years, according to the International Rescue Committee (IRC).
Hundreds of thousands of people suffered
In Niger, more than 840,000 people were affected, including 400,000 who were forced to leave their homes, the IRC reported. In Mali, floods affected more than 340,000 people, and in Nigeria, almost 240,000.
Floods are also damaging cultural sites in the region. In the city of Zinder in southeastern Niger, a 19th-century mosque collapsed. In the central city of Agadez, also known as the “gateway to the desert,” floods damaged the historic center, the BBC reported.
