The best cheese in the world. Polish gołka is second among smoked ones – Taste Atlas ranking


The best cheese in the world was Italian Parmigiano Reggiano – according to the new ranking of the culinary portal Taste Atlas. The list also includes Polish accents. In the smoked cheese category, second place was taken by a delicacy from Poland, although not the famous oscypek cheese.

On Monday, the culinary website Taste Atlas published a new list of the best cheeses in the world for 2023. It was created based on the ratings of registered Internet users. Over 24,000 were taken into account. ratings assigned to as many as 1,378 different cheeses from around the world.

The best cheese in the world

The best – or at least the best rated – cheese in the world was Italian Parmigiano Reggiano. It received 4.7 stars on a five-point scale. This cheese is made from partially skimmed cow’s milk. As written, it is characterized by a hard, granular consistency, and its taste may be nutty, more or less spicy. It was named after the city it comes from, Parma.

In second place was the Italian Mozzarella di Bufala Campana. It is made from buffalo milk, which contains a large amount of calcium and protein. It has a mild but slightly sour taste. This cheese is produced only in Campania and the neighboring regions of Italy – Lazio, Puglia and Molise.

Also in third place was Italian cheese – Stracchino di Crescenza. It is usually made from cow’s milk, but sometimes also from buffalo’s milk. Its texture is creamy and buttery, its flavor is mild, fruity or sweet.

The top ten also included: Greek Graviera Naxou, Portuguese Queijo Serra de Estrela, Italian Burrata, French Saint-André, French Reblochon, Pljevaljski Sir from Montenegro and again French Mont d’Or. Among Polish cheeses, Bryndza Podhalańska was ranked highest in the general classification – in 18th place.

Smoked cheese from Poland

Polish delicacies enjoyed great popularity in the category of smoked cheeses. Polish gołka – from Silesia and traditionally produced exclusively from cow’s milk – was considered the second best smoked cheese in the world. In its preparation and appearance, gołka may resemble oscypek cheese, it has a light yellow color, delicate taste and soft consistency. Among smoked cheeses, only Italian Provola was considered tastier.

In addition, the Polish redykołka, produced in Podhale and Beskid Silesia from the leftovers from the production of oscypek cheese, also ranks high, fourth among smoked cheeses. The ranking also included oscypek itself, which is one of the symbols of Pohale, a cheese made from sheep’s milk. It took ninth place in the Taste Atlas ranking.
