Trela: the talks will be finalized, the Senate pact will be announced

A representative of the youth, Mikołaj Rumianek from the New Generation, asked MP Tomasz Trela about this matter Monday’s statement by the co-chairman of the New Left Robert Biedroń, who stated that “the talks of the opposition leaders about the Senate pact have been completely frozen” and that “some” “believe that they should have more districts”.

He confronted this with the entry of another member of the Left and the party’s negotiator during the talks on the pact, Dariusz Wieczorek, who wrote: “I want to calm everyone down tomorrow for the next meeting of the Senate team and we are implementing everything as agreed!”.

– This statement [Roberta Biedronia – przyp. red.] was unnecessary – replied MP Trela. – The talks will be finalized, the Senate pact will be announced – he declared. We’ve got someone to fight with PIS and his small brown offspring – Sławomir Mentzen – added about relations within the opposition.

Senate pact

At the end of February, representatives of: Civic Coalition, Poland 2050, New Left, PSL and the Local Government Movement “Yes! For Poland” signed a declaration of concluding the so-called Senate pact in the upcoming parliamentary elections. It assumes that these parties will not put forward candidates against each other in the elections to the Senate, but will put forward common candidates in all constituencies. They will come from all parties in proportion to the poll support for each of them and taking into account the best chances in a given constituency. Current senators belonging to opposition clubs will have priority in standing for election under the pact.

The first Senate pact was concluded before the parliamentary elections in 2019: Civic Coalition (AFTERNowoczesna, Polish Initiative, Greens), Election Committee SLD (SLD, Lewica Together, Spring) and PSL – Coalition of Poland (including PSL and Kukiz’15). As part of the pact, in the vast majority of constituencies, the opposition put forward only one candidate for senator against PiS. Thanks to this, the opposition jointly won the elections to the Senate, obtaining 51 seats out of 100.
