Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived on Thursday in Kherson in the south of the country, which is partially flooded by the waters of the Dnieper. The Ukrainian authorities accuse the Russian occupation troops of blowing up the dam in Nowa Kakhovka. “Russia must be held accountable for everything it does against life and people,” Zelensky tweeted.

Zelensky held a meeting in Kherson devoted to the liquidation of the consequences of the disaster and the evacuation of people from flooded areas.

“Many important problems: the operational situation in the (Kherson) region, which occurred as a result of the disaster, the evacuation of the population from potential flooding zones, the liquidation of the emergency situation (…) the organization of life in the flooded territories,” Zelensky wrote on Telegram.

The President noted that during his visit, the following issues were also discussed: prospects for rebuilding the ecosystem of the Kherson region after the flood and the operational situation in connection with the military operations conducted there in the war with Russia.

“The most important thing is the assessment of losses and the separation of costs for compensation for residents who suffered as a result of the disaster (…)” – he pointed out. He noted that it is also important to develop a support program for enterprises in the Kherson region.

During a visit to Kherson, the president Ukraine he also went to the river crossing where people evacuated from flooded areas reach.

Ecological disaster

On Tuesday, Ukrainian authorities announced that the Russians blew up a dam on the Dnieper River in Nowa Kakhovka, which forms the 240 km long Kakhovsky Reservoir. The hydroelectric power plant located on the dam was completely destroyed. The water level in the reservoir is falling rapidly, and the evacuation of the areas below the dam at risk of flooding is underway.

30 villages in the Kherson region were flooded; 20 of them are located on the western bank of the river, controlled by the authorities in Kiev, and the rest in occupied territories, Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said on Wednesday.
