Two boys, aged seven and eight, were sliding down the slope in an unauthorized part. They lost control of the pontoon they were sitting on and fell down a 4-meter embankment. The prosecutor's office initiated an investigation into endangering children.
Information about the initiation of the investigation was provided on Tuesday by the spokeswoman of the District Prosecutor's Office in Krosno, Prosecutor Marta Kolendowska-Matejczuk. The case concerns the intentional exposure to direct danger of loss of life or serious bodily harm to two minor boys because their father and mother allowed them to slide down the snow in a pontoon in a place not intended for this purpose, on a slope near the gliding field in Bezmiechowa Górna. Moreover, the boys did not have helmets. One of them suffered severe head injuries
– One of the injured was transported to Clinical Hospital No. 2 in Rzeszów, where he was hospitalized with severe head injuries, in a life-threatening condition. The second victim suffered minor bruises and abrasions as a result of the incident, the prosecutor said.
Proc. Kolendowska-Matejczuk added that procedural activities are ongoing in the case, including, among others: hearing of witnesses. Monitoring from the building of the Academic Gliding Center in Bezmiechowa was also secured. It stands at the top of the slope where children were sliding down.
After the accident, the parents were tested for alcohol content in their bodies and were sober.
Accident on the slope
The accident occurred on Sunday afternoon at the gliding field in Bezmiechowa. The Podkarpacie police reported on Monday that preliminary findings show that the brothers came with their parents from Sanok and were sliding down the mountain on a rubber pontoon. They were unable to control their speed and fell from a four-meter embankment above the road.
The helicopter took the older brother, who was in a serious condition, to a hospital in Rzeszów. His brother suffered less serious injuries, but was also taken to hospital for detailed examination.
The Podkarpacie police emphasize that adults are responsible for ensuring the safety of children and young people.
– We appeal to parents and guardians of children and adolescents to be careful and common sense when practicing winter sports and playing in the snow – wrote the police.
The appeal is especially important now, when the winter holidays have begun in some parts of the country. The police also provide some rules for safe play in the snow. They point out, among other things, that you can only skate in designated areas, because skating on a frozen lake or a frozen pond is dangerous. You can go sledding down hills that are away from streets, intersections and water reservoirs; you are not allowed to attach your sled during the descent. You should also check the technical condition of the sled to make sure there are no broken rungs or protruding screws.
