Flood waves kidnapped the car in the Canary Islands and picked it into the ocean after the downpours of Gran Canaria. As the authorities of Telde, the most seriously affected area, it was not the only event of this type that took place there on Monday.
On Monday, around 13.30 local time over Gran Canaria formed a storm cell. The phenomenon was accompanied by heavy rainfall, which caused a rapid increase in the water level in the rivers. Local flooding took place, and the streets of the city were covered by water and mud.
Car in the ocean
Precipitation was particularly intense around the city of Telde in the eastern part of Gran Canaria. The surrounding authorities appealed to the residents to refrain from traveling after a swollen river kidnapped the car and threw it into the ocean on the beach in Salinetas. The car without passengers drifted near the shore. The mayor of the city Juan Antonio Pena said that this was not the only situation that was observed after heavy rain – many vehicles parked at the banks of the rivers were kidnapped by water.
According to local media, a dangerous situation also occurred in the tunnel connecting the GC1 motorway with the Salinetas industrial area, where four vehicles were trapped in standing water. Their drivers and passengers were saved without major problems, but the civil guard decided to close this journey until the weather stabilized. Traffic jams formed on many roads, and the water blocked entire lanes. The flood also broke into several houses, but not causing much damage.
“Let's not be too confident”
The authorities of the Telde commune confirmed in social media that the removal of the effects of the downpour lasted until late evening. After 10pm, it was not raining over Gran Canaria, but the roads were still covered with mud, and rivers were swollen and dangerous.
“We are still working in some districts, helping with various events. Let's not be too confident and avoid driving or parking near the banks of the gorges,” they said.
On the weekend Heavy rainfall occurred in continental Spainaround the city of Almeria.
