The chairman of the Polish Episcopal Conference, Archbishop Stanisław Gądecki, sent a letter on Wednesday to Mariusz Kamiński and Maciej Wąsik, who are serving prison sentences. He proposed a “humanitarian intervention” in their case with the Minister of Justice, Adam Bodnar. He also appealed to the inmates to stop their hunger protests. The hierarch’s gesture is a response to an earlier letter sent to him by politicians’ wives.

As the spokesman of the Polish Episcopal Conference, Jesuit Fr., said in a statement on Wednesday. Leszek Gęsiak, “Archbishop Stanisław Gądecki, president of the Polish Episcopal Conference, today received a letter from the spouses of Mr. Mariusz Kamiński and Maciej Wąsik, who are in prison, requesting mediation in their case with the Minister of Justice.”

“Therefore, the President of the Episcopate sent a letter to both prisoners with a proposal that, if accepted by them, he undertakes to undertake a humanitarian intervention in their case with the Minister of Justice, Mr. Adam Bodnar. At the same time, assuring both men of understanding the reasons for their decision such a dramatic form of protest, he asked them to stop the hunger protest, which, after so many days from its beginning, threatens not only their health, but also their lives,” we read.

The content of Gądecki’s letter to Kamiński and Wąsik was also published. “Today I received a letter from the gentlemen’s wives requesting mediation with the Minister of Justice regarding the release of the ministers. Therefore, I am asking you to stop the hunger protest, which, after so many days since it began, threatens not only health but also and the lives of the Lords,” the archbishop began.

“I fully understand the reasons for undertaking such a dramatic form of protest. The hunger protest is a form of expressing opposition to the actions of the authorities, perceived by you as radically unfair and as a potentially effective means of drawing the attention of people who follow their conscience in life,” he continued.

“Nevertheless, in order to demand justice, one must live. That is why I am asking the Ministers to change the form of the protest. At the same time, if accepted by you, I undertake to undertake a humanitarian intervention in your case with the Minister of Justice, Mr. Adam Bodnar.” – added.

As he stated in a letter to politicians, “the lives of each of you have value for our common homeland and can contribute to making it more just.”

The case of Wąsik and Kamiński

Kamiński and Wąsik have been on hunger strike in prisons for several days. President Andrzej Duda announced on Wednesday that he had received information from Mariusz Kamiński’s wife about a court order to forcefully feed Kamiński. On December 20, 2023, the District Court in Warsaw validly sentenced Kamiński and Wąsik to two years of imprisonment for abuse of power in connection with the so-called land scandal. On January 9, the police detained both politicians PISlater they were imprisoned.

Last Thursday, the President announced the initiation of pardon proceedings against Kamiński and Wąsik based on the Code of Criminal Procedure at the request of their wives.
