General Charles CQ Brown, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, arrived in Jordan on Saturday, where he began an unannounced visit to the Middle East, Reuters reported.
Reuters reported that the visit of the US military commander is intended to “help reduce tensions” in the region at a time when Iran announced revenge on Israel“I will be talking about how to stop a wider escalation and make sure we are taking all the steps necessary to avoid a larger conflict,” Brown told Reuters before landing in Jordan. The American commander is also scheduled to visit Israel and Egypt.
Iran and Lebanese Hezbollah have repeatedly announced they will retaliate for the attacks at the end of Julycarried out by or attributed to Israel.
Strengthened military presence
USA announced that they would help Israel repel a potential strike and strengthened their military presence in the Middle East. Currently, two American aircraft carriers with accompanying ships, a submarine with Tomahawk cruise missiles and a squadron of F-22 fighters are stationed in the area.
Brown told Reuters he would not speculate on the possibility of an Iranian attack, but said he would “discuss all scenarios with my Israeli counterpart,” including “how Israel might respond depending on how Iran and Hezbollah respond.”
Diplomatic campaign
The US has also launched a diplomatic campaign to discourage Tehran from responding. Iran has been warned that its attack would be met with serious consequences. Washington fears that a series of further blows between Israel and Iran and its allies could lead to uncontrolled escalation and open war in the region.
At the same time, the US is pressuring Israel and Hamas to accept a ceasefire in the war in the Gaza Strip that has been going on for over 10 months. Another round of talks on this matter is taking place in Cairo on Saturday. According to some sources, if the ceasefire were accepted, Iran would withdraw its planned attack on Israel.
