The Court of Competition and Consumer Protection upheld a fine of over PLN 60 million for Jeronimo Martins Polska, the owner of the Biedronka chain of stores. According to the office, the company incorrectly indicated the country of origin of vegetables and fruits in stores belonging to the chain, the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection announced on Monday.

SOKiK emphasized that misleading consumers may concern product features, including country of origin marking. “Full and reliable information about the products offered is the obligation of the entrepreneur and the inalienable right of the consumer” – it was written.

Errors in almost a third of Biedronka stores

The President of the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection, Tomasz Chróstny, initiated proceedings against Jeronimo Martins Polska in May 2020. The reason was complaints about the incorrect indication of the country of origin of vegetables and fruits in many Biedronka chain stores and the results of the inspection of the Trade Inspection confirming this.

The inspectors compared the data on shop signs with those on collective or individual packaging and in delivery documents.

Particular attention was paid to fruit and vegetables that were declared as Polish, and for which there was the greatest risk of giving the wrong country, because they grow both in Poland and in other countries. This includes onions, potatoes, cabbage, carrots, tomatoes, apples and strawberries.

Irregularities occurred in 27.8% of cases. Biedronka stores.
