The drought hit the Czech Republic unusually early this year. The rainfall that has appeared in recent months in this country has been negligible, so the soil is cracked and the vegetation lacks water.

The Czech Republic is struggling with drought. A shortage of rainfall with high air temperature and high insolation leads to a deficit of water in the soil, and this threatens crops. Only in the east of the country, in Moravia, the situation is slightly better, because two weeks ago the region was hit by heavy rains.

– At the beginning of June it rained sometimes, but this is not normal. It has only rained three times since the first of April, I don’t even remember it,’ said Vladimír Hanuš, a gardener.

– This year will be disastrous, especially for the corn crop. We see cracked soil, some plants are dying,’ added Otakar Šašek, another gardener.

Fire warnings have been issued

The high air temperature and lack of precipitation mean that the fire hazard in Czech forests is high.

“Due to the dry weather, a fire warning has already been issued for parts of the country,” said Pavel Jůza, a Czech meteorologist. “On Tuesday and Wednesday, showers are expected, but they will not be heavy, if anything, more in the south-eastern part of the country,” he added.
