The czech republic. Giant macaques. One of them still hasn’t come home

Macaques have escaped from a Czech zoo. The animals got out of the enclosure on Monday when a visitor damaged the fence. The capture operation is particularly difficult as tranquilizing injections could do more harm than good.

The escape of the animals began on Monday at the zoo in the city of Děčín, near the border with Germany. One of the visitors wanted to shake hands with the crested macaques (Macaca nigra) that were in the catwalk, but he was electrocuted by an electric fence. The enraged man tore off a piece of security, wanting to touch the animals at all costs.

Not an easy search operation

The clever monkeys immediately seized the opportunity. Nine macaques, including a male and an alpha female, escaped from the enclosure, and six of them managed to leave the zoo grounds. Those that remained in the zoo quickly found their way back to the enclosure, and the chase started after the escaped animals.

The search operation turned out to be quite difficult. Tranquilizers could not be used to capture the macaques because they are delayed, and sleepy monkeys could fall off a cliff, for example. Therefore, it was decided to use bait traps. As reported on Saturday afternoon by the CT24 portal, five monkeys have been caught so far – one male is still in the wild.

“He is very close to the zoo, he even looked at us once when we were leaving work,” spokeswoman for the garden Alena Houšková said. She added that the animals are in good condition.
