Iran's Supreme Court has overturned the death sentence for Iranian rapper Toomaj Salehi, accused of inciting riots, Reuters reported on Saturday, citing his lawyer. However, according to the lawyer, this is not the end. He informed that based on the appeal decision, the case “will be transferred for consideration” to another department.

“The death sentence for Toomaja Salehi has been overturned and, based on the decision made in the appeal proceedings of the Supreme Court, the case will be transferred to another department for consideration,” wrote lawyer Amir Raisian on the X platform.

He supported the protests and was sentenced to death

In his work, 33-year-old Salehi supported the protests that broke out in 2022 in Iran after the death in police custody of Mahsa Amini, a young Kurdish woman arrested by the customs police for allegedly wearing an “inappropriate” hijab. The revolutionary court accused the musician of “inciting rebellion, assembly, conspiracy, propaganda against the system and inciting riots.”

The rapper was arrested in October 2022 after publicly supporting nationwide demonstrations. In 2023, he was sentenced to six years and three months in prison, and the Supreme Court rejected the death penalty request. Despite this, the Iranian Revolutionary Court sentenced him to the maximum possible sentence in April this year.

– The First Division of the Revolutionary Court in central Isfahan has made an unprecedented move. He did not implement the Supreme Court's ruling and sentenced Salehi to the harshest penalty, Raisian announced then, announcing an appeal against the verdict.

According to data from Amnesty International, 853 people were executed in Iran in 2023 alone.
