The arrears of Poles towards telecommunications companies and internet providers exceed PLN 1 billion, according to data from the National Debt Register. The list of debtors includes a quarter of a million consumers and companies.

The President of the National Debt Register of the Economic Information Bureau (KRD) Adam Łącki pointed out that the debt to telecommunications operators “is increasing sometimes decreasing, but the average for the last year is PLN 1.25 billion”.

– It was higher at the beginning of the pandemic, when at its peak it reached even PLN 1.5 billion – he pointed out.

He added that the stabilization of the debt level has an impact on, among others, more thorough verification of potential customers.

According to KRD data, the debt to telecommunications operators and Internet providers currently amounts to over PLN 1 billion, and there are 250,000 debtors. consumers and companies. Such debt, he added, then disappears from the economic information bureau as a liability towards the operator, and returns in the form of an entry made by the securitization fund that purchased the debt package.

Companies account for 38 percent. the entire debt

Most corporate debtors are sole proprietorships – almost 22,000 entities with a debt of PLN 140 million, KRD analysts indicated. The average debt of a micro-entrepreneur is PLN 6.5 thousand. zloty. Men are more likely to pay than women

On the other hand, among debtors-consumers, of whom there are nearly 213,000, men dominate in non-payment of bills (121,000 are in arrears). There are 91,000 women in this group, but the average debt oscillates around 3,000. zloty. The largest group of people in arrears with telecommunications fees are people aged 36-45 (57,000 people). The ranking is closed by the youngest Poles (aged 18-25), among them 18 thousand. has a problem with paying the bill for telephone, TV or internet. On the other hand, in terms of place of residence, the largest group are residents of cities with a population of 20,000 to 50,000. inhabitants (46.4 thousand people) they also have the largest debt – a total of PLN 134.5 million. In the ranking of voivodeships, Mazowieckie Voivodeship took first place – where the total liabilities of consumers and companies towards telecommunications operators totaled PLN 168 million. The second is Silesia (PLN 135 million), and the third – Dolnośląskie (over PLN 102 million). Experts reminded that the widespread use of the Internet and mobile phones means that Poles consider a telephone number as their second PESEL number. According to the study “Knowledge about the security of personal data protection in Poland” conducted on behalf of the ChronPESEL.pl website and the National Debt Register in May this year, every second respondent considers a telephone number to be personal data.

– It is surprising, however, that at the same time only about 22 percent. of respondents consider the IP address or location data (e.g. location settings on a mobile phone) to be personal data. Meanwhile, such information may also allow the identification of a specific person – noted Bartłomiej Drozd, an expert at ChronPESEL.pl. He emphasized that this data should be protected similarly to the PESEL number. “Currently, one of the most popular fraud methods is vishing, which is a type of phishing that involves impersonating a well-known institution or company in a telephone conversation,” he warned. According to the survey, 42 percent of respondents say that the greatest risk of losing personal data is theft by fraud or phishing with fake phone calls, e-mails or text messages. – So let’s be careful where and to whom we give our phone number – warned Drozd.
