The Digitization Council adopted a resolution on the use of TikTok on official devices in the state administration. It is suggested to ban the use of this app. However, as noted by Janusz Cieszyński, Secretary of State at the Chancellery of the Prime Minister, “it does not change practically anything in the situation of TikTok in Poland”.
The Digitization Council today adopted a resolution on the use of TikTok on official devices in the state administration. It recommended banning the use of this application. Does this change anything in practice? “Firstly, the Council is an advisory body. This means that its position is in no way binding for institutions and citizens. Responsibility for the security of information processed on official devices rests with a specific institution each time, and the position of the Council does not change this,” he writes. Janusz Cieszyński in a Twitter post.
The Secretary of State further states that “The Council’s position statement did not provide technical evidence of the risks of having Tik Tok on a user’s phone.”
At the same time, it should be noted that in recent months there have been reports of security concerns about Tik Tok, the use of the application for the surveillance of journalists confirmed by the company, Cieszyński wrote.
Cieszyński notes that each public institution has an information security policy and one of its basic elements should be “an order to separate private data from business data”.
“Since Tik Tok is, according to the creators, an application for entertainment, it is difficult to indicate situations in which the installation of the application on a work phone is compliant with the provisions of the security policy. Exceptions to this situation are described in the resolution” – noted Cieszyński.
The Secretary of State in the Chancellery of the Prime Minister stated in the entry that the Council, taking into account media reports as well as Chinese regulations, warns against keeping sensitive data used by the state administration on a device with TikTok installed. In his opinion, such a recommendation “is impossible to disagree with”.
