The case of Emanuela Orlandi’s disappearance, one of Italy’s most puzzling, opened a new chapter on Tuesday, Reuters reported. The brother of the teenager who disappeared in 1983 met with the Vatican prosecutor Alessandro Diddi, whom Pope Francis gave “maximum freedom of action” in clarifying the case. “Today is a great day,” Pietro Orlandi told reporters.

Emanuela Orlandi, the daughter of a lay Vatican official, disappeared on June 22, 1983. The 15-year-old left home for a flute lesson and never came back. Over the course of four decades, many theories have emerged about her fate. Investigators assumed that she might have been kidnapped by the mafia or that she was a bargaining chip in the fight to free Ali Agca from prison.

Pope Pope John Paul IIwho was the victim of his attack, publicly appealed eight times to the kidnappers for the girl’s release. To this day, it has not been possible to determine what ultimately happened to Orlandi.

In January, the Vatican unexpectedly announced that investigators of the Holy See will officially undertake to investigate the casesy. On Tuesday afternoon, the brother of the missing Pietro Orlandi, together with the representative of the family, Laura Sgrò, met with the promoter of justice, Alessandro Diddi, the prosecutor of the Vatican Tribunal. “Today is a big day,” Orlandi told reporters shortly before entering the expected meeting, announced before Easter.

Prosecutor Diddi: The pope wants a complete clarification of the case

“Corriere della Sera” recalls that Emanuela’s brother had previously made an official request to meet the prosecutor in order to share the materials he had collected – testimonies, alleged evidence.

In an interview with Corriere della Sera, before meeting Orlandi, prosecutor Diddi emphasized that both Pope Francisand the Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, gave him “maximum freedom of action to conduct a wide-ranging investigation without any conditions and with a firm call not to keep anything secret.”

Asked if there was a strong desire on the part of the pope to get to the truth about Emanuela Orlandi, he replied that “the desire and the iron will of the pope and the secretary of state is to clarify completely” the matter.

Brother Emanuela Orlandi: Long interrogations in the Vatican will not be necessary because they know the truth

Brother Emanuela Orlandi, commenting in January on the opening of the investigation by Vatican investigatorswrote on social media: “The investigation into Emanuela’s kidnapping, launched now, after 40 years, can be very short, provided it is accompanied by sincerity and willingness to do justice to Emanuela. Long interrogations in the Vatican will not be needed, because they know the truth , it is enough for them to disclose it. If not, I count on being summoned to testify as soon as possible,” Orlandi wrote on social media.

“I cannot but be satisfied with the current situation. As always, I prefer to think positively and see the glass half full,” he added.

In early April, Pietro Orlandi confessed to the Italian La7 television program that “he has documents confirming the teenager’s departure to Great Britain and the fees that Vatican officials were to pay for the girl’s stay in the convent there.”

“I’ve never spoken publicly about this before, but I know that high-ranking figures in the Vatican and English institutions have established some relationship in connection with my sister’s case,” he added.

Italian MPs want to investigate the case of Emanuela Orlandi

In March The Italian Parliament voted in favor of the creation of a committee of inquirywhich will analyze the disappearance files of Orlandi and Mirella Gregori, a girl from Rome who disappeared a month before Emanuela.

The commission will consist of 20 deputies and 20 senators – they are to interrogate, among others, lay people and clergy who have never testified before during several investigations conducted by the Roman prosecutor’s office. The launch of the new proceedings and the start of work by the Vatican is the result of requests directed by the Emanuela family and the series that appeared on the popular streaming platform in early January this year.
