In the latest e-mail scandal, the alleged correspondence between the head of the Government Information Center, Tomasz Matynia, and Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and his advisers was revealed. It was about how to use politically the proposal of the Civic Platform on abortion law from February this year. “The issue of abortion has fallen from heaven to us today,” the head of the CIR reportedly wrote.
Correspondence has been appearing on the Internet for several months, which is to come – as the screenshots suggest – from the private mail of the head of the office of Prime Minister Michał Dworczyk. The rulers questioned the veracity of the e-mails, but so far have not shown a single example of manipulated correspondence.
The editors of the tvn24.pl portal asked the Government Information Center with questions about the latest leak. At the time of publication, we have not received a reply to it.
Exchange of e-mails about the position of the PO on abortion
In the latest version of the so-called There is a correspondence between Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and the director of the Government Information Center, Tomasz Matynia, of the e-mail scandal.
The exchange of e-mails applies Civic Platform position on abortion. On February 18, the politicians of this party presented the Women’s Rights Package, which assumes the restoration of the three prerequisites for termination of pregnancy, which had been in force until the publication of the Constitutional Tribunal’s judgment of October 2020, and – in particularly difficult situations, after consulting a psychologist and a doctor – so that a woman could take the decision whether to terminate the pregnancy, and the law should make it possible for her to do so. The right to an abortion would apply until the end of the 12th week of pregnancy.
– In particularly difficult personal situations, after meeting certain conditions, such as consultation with a psychologist, consultation with a doctor, it is the woman who should make this personal decision – said Izabela Leszczyna, KO MP.
Matynia: today the issue of abortion has fallen from heaven to us
According to the alleged correspondence that was leaked as part of the e-mail scandal, Tomasz Matynia was to write to the prime minister and a group of his advisers on how the government could benefit from the idea of the Civic Platform. “The issue of abortion has fallen from the sky today. This is a chance for us to position the Platform more to the left and make room for us” – said Matynia. The director of CIR was to suggest that “it is worth rethinking active action” and proposing “eg a statement at a high political level”.
Then Matynia was to propose a “language proposal” to describe this situation. He advised politicians of the government camp to say that “Civic Platform discovered what we had been saying for months”, that “it is a left-wing party, hiding its real goals”, and abortion on demand is “a postulate of the extreme left in Poland”.
As a second proposal, Matynia was to suggest that the government camp repeated that “the proposed changes are inconsistent with the constitution”. “We have heard for months about respect for the fundamental law, and now the Civic Platform proposes abortion on request, which is inconsistent with the Polish Constitution, which was already confirmed over 20 years ago by the Constitutional Tribunal,” the prime minister’s adviser was to write.
The director of CIR was also supposed to suggest that politicians of the government camp should use the rhetoric that “PO is not a place even for asymptomatic conservatives”, and “someone who calls himself a conservative and remains in this party must have serious dilemmas in conscience.” He also suggested saying that “Civic Platform is a left-wing party, Marta Lempart turned out to be the ideologist of the Civic Platform.” She is the initiator and one of the leaders of the National Women’s Strike.
Matynia: Szymon Hołownia will be the first beneficiary of the PO declaration
Then Matynia was to write about how the PO’s declaration had a political impact on other parties.
The disclosed correspondence stated that “the first beneficiary of the Civic Platform declaration” will be Szymon Hołownia, for whom “today a very large field opens”. “That’s why he needs to be positioned on the left side” – said Matynia. He was to consider how the situation would affect the ratings of Jarosław Gowin and his party, Agreement, which was still in the government coalition at the time. “Gowin can gather conservative PO voters – that’s why the PiS offer is needed for these people – the New Deal will be perfect” – the director of CIR was supposed to write.
He was also supposed to present his comments on “returning to the topic of abortion”. “It dimmed a bit and did not favor us, but now there is an opportunity that from the beginning the Women’s Strike is a leftist revolution with the PO in the background. It will give oxygen to our conservatives” – wrote Matynia.
To this alleged e-mail, the prime minister was supposed to reply with a short “Yes”. “The TVN party and RASP (Ringier Axel Springer Polska – ed.) Know that they will burn this topic now, they will not pull it out until 2023”. – said the prime minister’s advisor, Mariusz Chłopik.
The e-mail scandal of the PiS government
Both members of the government and Dworczyk himself refrain from answering questions that concern matters presented in the allegedly published e-mails.
The Government Information Center has repeatedly stressed that “Poland has experienced a cybernetic and disinformation attack carried out from the territory of the Russian Federation”, therefore “the Chancellery of the Prime Minister will not comment on the content of the materials.”
