“Numerous operations of the UNC1151 group against Polish entities”
On Tuesday, the Polish services informed that the UNC1151 group associated with the Russian secret services was behind the attack as part of the operation “Ghostwriter”. The activities of this group were first described by the American cybersecurity company Mandiant Intelligence, according to which activities as part of the Ghostwriter operation, aimed at destabilizing the region, may reach even 2016.
Mandiant Intelligence Director of Analysis Ben Read told PAP that the company “discovered numerous operations of the UNC1151 group against Polish entities”.
“We estimate that these intrusions are related to Ghostwriter’s information operations in Poland.” However, as the expert pointed out, the center has so far not gathered sufficient evidence to attribute the attack to a specific country. At the same time, according to Mandiant, UNC1151 group is related to a foreign country.
The e-mail scandal
At the beginning of June, Minister Michał Dworczyk, the head of the Chancellery of the Prime Minister, informed about his e-mail hack. June 18 Deputy Prime Minister for Security Affairs, President of Law and Justice Jarosław Kaczyński published a statement in which he wrote, inter alia, that “the most important Polish officials, ministers and deputies of various political options were subject to a cyber attack”. He added that the attack was carried out “from the territory of the Russian Federation” and that “its scale and scope are wide”.
On Tuesday, Stanisław Żaryn, spokesman of the minister for the special services coordinator, said in a statement that “the findings of the Internal Security Agency and the Military Counterintelligence Service show that There were at least 4,350 email addresses on the target list of UNC1151’s social engineering attack belonging to Polish citizens or operating on Polish e-mail services “.
