At least 10 people died as a result of heavy rainfall in the state of Minas Gerais in southeastern Brazil, authorities said. Many houses were destroyed by mudslides. Several hundred roads are impassable.

Nine people killed in the downpours that occurred on Sunday were residents of Ipatinga commune. Four people were also confirmed dead in this commune and one person in Santana do Paraiso. The state civil defense services specified that two children were among the dead.

The death toll, authorities say, could rise as rain continues to fall in the region. They confirmed at least one case of the disappearance of a resident of flooded areas.

Major damage

The most difficult situation is in Ipatinga, where several dozen residential buildings were destroyed due to mudslides and rivers overflowing their banks. More than 150 people had to be evacuated.

Ipatinga Prefect Gustavo Morais Nunes said during Sunday's press conference that the flood and landslides also led to numerous damages to public infrastructure. Several hundred roads in the region are impassable, making rescue operations difficult.

Morais Nunes added that the local authorities, expecting an increase in the number of people in need of help, will soon open temporary places of stay for the affected population at the municipal stadium in Ipatinga.
