A conference on the reconstruction of Ukraine was organized in London. The head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen took part in the event. “The European Union has a special responsibility towards Ukraine,” she said. She declared that in the long term, the EU would provide EUR 50 billion for the reconstruction of the country devastated by the Russian invasion.

– These (funds) are intended to cover the most urgent needs Ukraine. But let’s talk about the future. I believe that European Union has a special responsibility,” Von der Leyen said.

– Ukrainians tell us that when they imagine their future, they see the flag of Europe flying over their cities. And I have no doubt that Ukraine will be part of our Union, assured the President of the European Commission.

“It is the private sector that will help Ukraine realize its dreams”

Von der Leyen also stated that reforms in Ukraine should be combined with European investments in the country, and the private sector must take part in rebuilding the country.

– Through the reforms, Ukraine also sends a strong message to private investors: they can count on the transparency, level playing field and well-functioning institutions they need to invest in Ukraine. (…) It is the private sector with its invaluable experience and financial strength that will help Ukraine realize its dreams, she stressed.

“For every step you take towards us, the European Union must take a step towards Ukraine,” concluded Von der Leyen.
