Firefighters are fighting fires raging on the border of the American states of New Jersey and New York. Several hundred firefighters were engaged to fight the fire. One of them died during the firefighting operation. The difficult situation is made worse by the worst drought in decades.

According to New Jersey Fire Chief Bill Donnelly, strong winds carried the fires from New York to New Jersey. The largest of them, called The Jennings Creek, which has been burning along the border between the two states since Friday, has already consumed more than 1,000 hectares, Donnelly added.

Donnelly said Sunday that 75 firefighters, along with more than 200 members of local volunteer fire departments, had been mobilized to fight the blazes, protect buildings and deliver food and water supplies to residents.

A firefighter died, there will be an investigation

One firefighter – identified by New York authorities as 18-year-old Dariel Vasquez – died when a tree fell on him while he was battling a blaze along the New York-New Jersey border. According to Jeremy Oldroyd, a forest ranger with the New York State Department of Environmental Protection, the accident is being investigated by state police.

Acrid smoke warnings have been issued in New York.

The biggest drought in decades

Last month was the driest October in Newark, New Jersey's most populous city, since 1949, according to the state weather service.

Charges for the man who started the fire

The prosecutor's office in New Jersey has brought charges against a man who started a forest fire called the Shutgun Fire while practicing at a shooting range. Drought and strong wind gusts have already burned over 140 hectares, ABC reported on Sunday.

The charges include both arson and firearms violations: the fire was caused by the remains of incendiary ammunition, the use of which is banned in New Jersey, local prosecutors said.

A fire broke out on Wednesday in Jackson Township in central New Jersey. The man turned himself in to the police, the portal reported.
