Piast Gliwice started the Ekstraklasa season brilliantly and after a draw with Cracovia (1:1) beat Śląsk Wrocław (2:0) and Legia Warsaw (2:1). Thanks to this and the results of the fourth round, Aleksandar Vuković's players had a chance to become the league leaders if they beat GKS Katowice. The newcomer entered the match after a draw and defeat with Radomiak Radom (1:2), a victory with Stal Mielec (1:0) and a defeat with Raków Częstochowa (0:1).
There will be no leader. Piast Gliwice tied with GKS Katowice
The match started with an even game, but Piast players had the optical advantage. However, it was GKS who first scored in the rivals' net. After a great pass into the penalty area from Mateusz Kowalczyk, Adam Zrelak won the position and in the 19th minute gave Katowice the lead. For the 30-year-old Slovak, it was the first goal this season.
The visitors didn't enjoy their lead for long, because in the 31st minute Kowalczyk lost the ball in the middle of the pitch, and Damian Kądzior took over. The winger passed the ball to Michael Ameyaw, who scored with a great shot from the edge of the penalty area, making it 1:1. The ball bounced off the post after the shot, and goalkeeper Dawid Kudła had no chance.
The tie lasted until half-time, but right after the resumption of play, Piast struck again. This time, Kudła punched the ball badly after a cross, and Michał Chrapek got to it. The unattended 32-year-old struck the middle of the goal with his left foot, but the surprised GKS defense could do nothing about it. Gliwice were already leading 2:1.
In the following minutes, the hosts waited for a counterattack, and the guests were increasingly asserting themselves. Their persistence paid off in the 68th minute, when first Bartosz Nowak sent a great pass into the penalty area, and then Zrelak made a fool of Jakub Czerwiński and put the ball into the net for 2:2.
Piast attacked much more often in the rest of the match, but GKS defended very effectively. They were also quite lucky when in the 85th minute Kudła badly deflected a shot by Miłosz Szczepański, and Ameyaw missed the rebound into an empty net. There were no more good situations and the match ended in a 2:2 draw and the points were shared.
Piast Gliwice remains unbeaten after four matches of the season and with eight points is in second place in the Ekstraklasa. In turn, GKS with four “points” is 12th and has two points advantage over the relegation zone.
