Georgia’s ambassador to Ukraine will leave Kiev and go to his country for consultations, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Twitter. This decision is related to the actions of the authorities in Tbilisi in the case of Mikheil Saakashvili and ignoring Ukraine’s appeals for his transfer to provide him with the necessary treatment and care.

Zelensky on Twitter.

“Once again, I appeal to the Georgian authorities to hand over citizen Mikheil Saakashvili to Ukraine for the necessary treatment and care. I also call on our partners to address this situation, not to ignore it, and to save this man. No government in Europe has the right to to execute people. Life is a fundamental European value,” he added.

Saakashvili’s health is deteriorating

“You should apologize for making me feel like this.” Apologies to members of the European Parliament, my family, me, Ukraine and all Georgians,’ Saakashvili said earlier on Monday, addressing Georgian authorities during a trial in Tbilisi.

The former president participated in it remotely. Saakashvili’s statement was quoted by the Ukrainian Pravda portal. As it was emphasized, the politician in custody looked extremely exhausted in the recording.

Saakashvili, president of Georgia in 2004-2013 and governor of Ukraine’s Odessa region in 2015-16, is serving a six-year prison sentence for abuse of power as head of state. The former leader and his supporters see the punishment as politically motivated.

Saakashvili was imprisoned in October 2021 and subsequently led several hunger strikes there. At the end of 2021, he was taken to the hospital. In the opinion of many Georgian and Western defenders human rights the former president’s health is so serious that it threatens his life.
