At least 19 people died in Sri Lanka and India as a result of the tropical cyclone. There were flash floods and mudslides. Many houses are damaged.

Cyclone Fengal hit southeastern India on Sunday, flooding city streets. Earlier, for several days the element moved along the eastern coast of Sri Lanka, bringing heavy rainfall and leading to extensive floods and mudslides.

According to local authorities, 16 people died in Sri Lanka and almost 140,000 families were affected by the cyclone. Several thousand people were evacuated and hundreds of houses were damaged. Three people died in India.

The most rain per day in decades

The worst flash floods in India occurred in the state of Tamil Nadu, especially in the area of ​​Puducherry and the surrounding area on the Bay of Bengal. The city recorded the highest 24-hour rainfall in 30 years, the India Meteorological Department said on Sunday.

The northern city of Chennai was also largely affected by the cyclone. Flights from the local airport were suspended on Saturday.
