The impact of 5G radiation on our health. Facts, myths and who cares about disinformation

The biggest avalanche of theories about the harmful effects of 5G has emerged Internet at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. In Great Britain, telecommunications masts were even set on fire. The hysteria related to the new technology continues to this day, although scientists tirelessly explain – as long as safety standards are met, there is nothing to be afraid of.

What actually lies behind the mysterious 5G?

This is the next generation of the cellular network, using waves with frequencies from 700 MHz to 26 GHz. The key is that we are talking about non-ionizing radiation – radiation that does not have enough energy to damage DNA or cause cell mutations.. 5G transmitters work with less power than the older generation, but there must be more of them due to the shorter wave range.

What does science say?

The World Health Organization analyzed over 25,000 scientific studies. Application? When complying with international exposure limits, 5G does not pose a health risk. The American FDA went a step further – for a decade (2008-2018) it studied the impact of radio waves on the human body. She found no connection with cancer or other diseases.

Who is spreading disinformation and why?

A report from a BBC investigation from 2020 revealed the backstage of great disinformation – hundreds of bots on Twitter systematically flooded the network with fake news about the harmfulness of 5G. Where did these accounts come from? The trail led mainly to Russia. This is confirmed by the report of East Stratcom, a special EU cell tracking disinformation. Experts have no doubt – Moscow and China are taking advantage of global anxiety to reduce trust in Western institutions.

But why does Russia care so much about burying 5G? The answer lies in gas and oil pipes. The Russian economy relies largely on the export of energy raw materials. TMeanwhile, the development of 5G and 6G is detrimental to this. A high-speed network is the foundation for energy transformation in the West. The more efficiently the Internet works thingsthe faster the West will become independent from fossil fuels. It is therefore not surprising that Moscow is doing everything to slow down the development of this technology.

In spreading falsehoods information Sellers of “miracle” devices that supposedly protect against radiation are also involved. It's a big business that preys on people's fear.

The most frequently repeated nonsense

There are many theories circulating online about the alleged harmfulness of 5G. Meanwhile, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) this radiation is classified in group 2B – the same group in which we find pickled vegetables. This means that there is insufficient evidence that it is harmful to health.

What about “electrosensitivity”? Scientists have not confirmed its existence. The reported symptoms are rather related to: nocebo effect – when the mere belief that technology is harmful causes real symptoms.

Where to look for the truth?

Instead of believing online conspiracy theories, it is worth reaching for publications of recognized institutions. WHO and the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) set restrictive safety standards. Mobile network operators must comply with them – this is not up for debate.
