His film brother, who plays Henry Lamar Johnson, told about working with the deaf actor. In an interview with TV Guide, he admitted that he started learning American Sign Language as soon as he found out that Keivonn Woodard would star in the production. “When I read the scripts, I thought, okay, this is going to be a challenge,” he said. He was also accompanied on the set by a sign language interpreter. As the actor added, HBO provided all the help that he could take care of what he considered most important: a believable portrayal of the unique relationship between the brothers.

– I started taking lessons as soon as possible. I trained before shooting and even during it. I’ve been working on making it feel as natural as possible,” he replied when asked about the process of learning sign language. He added that it took less than seven days from the beginning of the training to the first day of shooting, and already a month and a half later he was able to “communicate naturally”. “We had a great bond with Keivonn,” he said.

However, in order to communicate effectively with Woodard, the rest of the cast and production crew began learning sign language as well. Among them, Bella Ramsey, who played Ellie Williams on the series, was particularly good at learning sign language. In a video shared by HBO Max on social media, she said that Woodard, his mum and other sign language speakers on set were “very happy to help anyone who wanted to learn.” “At the end, everyone in the crew was signing because everyone wanted to communicate to show them how great they were,” she added.

– Sam is deaf and I am deaf, we both sign. And we know how deaf people are and how they move around the world, and that they can. I think it’s important,” Woodard said in the same video. As noted by Deadline, the use of American Sign Language in the portrayal of Henry and Sam’s relationship “not only adds a new dimension but also highlights the beauty of this communication that goes beyond hearing.”
