Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Arkadiusz Marchewka provided new information about the crew of the Jawor ship, which was detained in a port in Brazil at the beginning of October. He informed that the local court “decided to return the passports of all crew members and allowed them to leave the country.”
“I received the latest information regarding the crew of the 'Jawor' ship detained in the Brazilian port of Sao Luis. The court in Brazil issued a decision to return the passports of all crew members and allowed them to leave the country. Consular support and involvement of the Polish Steamship Company, to which belongs to the ship, it allowed the crew to return home,” wrote the deputy minister on the X platform.
Half a ton of cocaine on a Polish ship in Brazil
At the beginning of October, the bulk carrier PŻM arrived at the Brazilian port of Itaqui in Sao Luis to pick up a load of soybeans. He waited for two days at the anchorage. On October 4, one of the sailors noticed a broken seal at the entrance to one of the empty rooms (so-called void space) between the superstructure and the holds. There were wrapped packages inside. The captain was notified and he, through an agent, informed the police. The officers determined that the suspicious package was cocaine. Half a ton in total.
On October 6, PŻM reported that drug smuggling by the crew of a bulk carrier had been thwarted. PŻM spokesman Krzysztof Gogol informed then that the drug packages were probably planted at night.
MS Jawor is 230 meters long. The anchorage is not subject to enhanced surveillance, and South American drug cartels are increasingly trying to use merchant ships for smuggling.
The crew of MS Jawor, which arrived in Brazil at the beginning of October, consists of 20 people. Half of them are Poles, the rest are Ukrainians, Bulgarians and Romanians. The PŻM spokesman emphasized then that the crew of the Polish ship acted in accordance with the procedures. He also reminded that the course of the watch on the ship is recorded.
