Former Polish ambassador to the US, Ryszard Schnepf, spoke in “Fakty po Faktach” about “what will be the American policy next” regarding media freedom in Poland. He pointed out that for Americans “free media, free word is really sacred.” Referring to the extended TVN24 license and the resolution of the National Broadcasting Council, he assessed that “work on the ownership structure of TVN, ie the ownership of Discovery in Poland, will continue and it will be a bit of a stick that will be used on various occasions”.
The National Broadcasting Council has extended the license for TVN24. The station has been waiting for the license extension for over a year and a half. The spokesman of the Council, Teresa Brykczyńska, remarked that before the vote, the Council unanimously adopted a resolution “on taking actions aimed at organizing the principles of broadcasting radio and television programs in Poland in the scope of the activities of entities from outside the European Economic Area”. As she said before the vote on the concession, “without this resolution, the National Council (Radio and Television – ed.) Will not vote on the concession issue”.
Commenting on this situation, the former Polish ambassador to the US, Ryszard Schnepf, said in “Fakty po Faktach” on TVN24 that “on the one hand, of course, you will be able to broadcast, but work on the ownership structure of TVN, i.e. the ownership of Discovery in Poland, will be continued and it will be a little stick that will be used on various occasions. “
Schnepf: We were happy that the station got something that was obvious
American concert Discovery Inc. is the owner of TVN through its subsidiary Polish Television Holding BV in the Netherlands, thus belonging to the European Economic Area.
Schnepf pointed out that for Americans “free media, free word is really sacred, it is an element of the constitution that is fulfilled with extreme precision and every violation of freedom of speech is met with a very strong reaction, both socially and also most politicians”.
He stressed that free media “for America is a fundamental issue.” – The fact that in Poland it has become the subject of controversy, some maneuvering, completely incomprehensible, is what the editor talked about. That we were to be glad that the station got something that was obvious in fact. It is an extremely terrifying reality that we are experiencing at the moment – said the diplomat.
In his opinion, “this game continues”. – If we want to see it in its entirety, what will be the American policy towards this issue, then I can assure you, from my experience, that the American administration will obviously defend two issues – he continued. He explained that it was about the issue of “freedom of speech in Poland, because it is a standard in America, and values are important to Joe Biden”, and the issue of economic interests.
– Let us remember that the economic agreement between Poland and the United States, concluded in March 1990, is still in force. And these attempts to amend the Broadcasting Act simply tried to break it, assessed Schnepf, referring to the Lex TVN Act, which was rejected by the Senate at the beginning of September.
