The AP agency reports that the Maldivian authorities intend to ban Israelis from entering the country. The state religion of the Maldives is Islam, and the reason for the decision is the war waged by Israel in the Gaza Strip. In response, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs advised its citizens against traveling to the archipelago.

The president's office said the government decided to change the law to prevent Israelis from visiting the country, known for its beaches, tropics, luxury hotels and resorts. Legislative process is to be supervised by a specially designated subcommittee.

Last year, 11,000 guests visited the Maldives Israelwho accounted for approximately 0.6 percent of foreign tourists.

Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a recommendation on Sunday that citizens – including those with dual citizenship – should not travel to the Maldives, and those who are already there should consider returning to the country. It would be difficult for the Israeli authorities to provide them with help if such a need arises, the ministry said.
