The mystery of why Roman buildings lasted for thousands of years has been solved

What made the buildings from the times of ancient Rome last thousands of years? According to an international team of scientists, white limestone clusters added to the concrete mix are responsible for this. – The Romans were able to create and transform cities into something that is unusual and beautiful to live in. The majestic buildings of ancient Rome are a testimony to the ingenuity of local engineers who have mastered the use of concrete to perfection. But what made the Pantheon or the Colosseum stand for over two thousand years?

A team of researchers, including scientists from the United States, Italy and Switzerland, studied samples taken from 2,000-year-old building fragments at the Privernum archaeological site in central Italy. They were similar in composition to other concretes found throughout the Roman Empire. Experts found that the white pieces in the material, called limestone clusters, gave the concrete the ability to bridge cracks that developed over time. Previously, scientists thought these white bits were simply a sign of sloppy mortar mixing

“I really found it hard to believe that ancient Roman engineers wouldn’t have done a good job because they took great care in choosing and creating materials,” said Admir Masic, one of the authors of the study and a professor of civil and environmental engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He added that this discovery could improve concrete production in the future and make the material more durable. “Concrete allowed the Romans to have an architectural revolution,” observed Masic. – The Romans were able to create and transform cities into something that is unusual and beautiful to live in. And this revolution has basically completely changed the way people live, he stressed.

Lime clusters and durability of concrete

Concrete is an artificial stone or rock made by mixing cement, a binder usually made of limestone, water, fine aggregate (sand or finely crushed rock) and coarse aggregate (gravel or crushed rock).

As Masic said, from ancient Roman texts, it could be inferred that engineers used slaked lime as a binder. “That’s why scientists assumed that’s how Roman concrete was made,” said Masic.

As a result of further research, the researchers concluded that the lime clusters resulted from the use of quicklime (calcium oxide) – the most reactive and dangerous dry form of limestone – during concrete mixing, instead of or alongside slaked lime. Additional analysis of the concrete showed that the clusters formed at high temperature, and “hot mixing” was key to the durability of the concrete.
