The last days have brought in Poland rainfall. This is particularly important this year, when the plants have been weakened by drought and the interstitus of large heat and cold. As Michał Brennek told TVN24, more such contrasts may be waiting for us on TVN24 meteorologist.

For several days, Central Europe has been located than Lorenz, bringing rainfall. In some regions, 40-50 liters of rain have already fallen per square meter, and on Thursday snow attacked in the mountains. The rain is accompanied by low values on thermometers.

“It's so cold because it's so warm”

As meteorologist Michał Brennek from the Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, which has been falling for several days, is good news for farmers. The beginning of the year brought a large moisture deficit.

The expert explained that supplementing water resources is not the only important issue. At the current stage of development, plants need a lot of water – its lack can have serious economic effects, associated with, for example, higher food prices. High temperatures recorded at the beginning of the year did not help either.

– Please remember that it is so cold because it is so warm. This is a bit non -intuitive, because in the climate we are talking about subsequent records – he said. – In January, we had over 20 degrees Celsius in the plus, or almost summer, and a few weeks later in February drops to -20. It is such violent changes that make plants want to develop – he added.

Where did the heat go?

Brennek handed over. that the rafting of cold air to Europe is associated with an extraordinary air circulation for this time of year. As he explained, in typical conditions the temperature difference between the frozen Arctic and the warm noon causes that a polar front is formed in the atmosphere, in which strong gusts of wind occur.

“The vortex that circulates our planet holds cold air in the north and thus allows you to reach our latitudes warm,” he said. – When it gets too warm in the Arctic, and (…) it is a region that warms four times faster than the whole planet, these gusts slow down. This means that meanders are starting to make in the River, and instead of swimming parallel, the air from the north can reach very far south, bringing rapid cooling. A few days, a few weeks later, he can reach us very hot air, bringing very high temperatures – he explained.

The snow protects and irrigates

The expert also told about the role of snow in the water cycle. When spring and snow comes melts, it supplies water exactly at the moment when the plants need it the most.

– At the same time, please remember that snow is an insulator, because snowflakes between ice needles contain air, and therefore snow cover isolates plants from rapid temperature changes and soil from deep freezing. This especially helps to survive winter plant varieties and start with good resources into the new vegetation season – he said.

Brennek added that long -lasting rainfall, not intense and very short ones, will have the greatest importance. In this way, water will accumulate in the soil.

– The new climate is the atmosphere of contrasts. There are phenomena when the northeast of the country suffered from drought, and in the south we had a flood. Unfortunately, this violence of phenomena and contrasts, which we will observe in nature, will only deepen – he concluded.
